[edit] Bone Scan Pitfalls

Tumors which are slow growing or rapidly enlarging incite little osteoblastic response (e.g., thyroid cancer, renal cell carcinoma, multiple myeloma). Lesions that are primarily situated in the marrow (leukemia, lymphoma) may not be apparent as well.

[edit] Cold Nodules on Bone Scan

Cold defects in vertebral bodies can also be caused by metastases, infarction, radiation therapy, osteomyelitis, and metabolic bone disease (including brown tumors and Gaucher's disease).

[edit] Liver uptake on Bone Scan

Tracer uptake by liver metastases is most frequent with mucinous adenocarcinomas of the colon but can also be seen with other tumors, particularly lung and breast cancers due to their frequency of occurrence. Other causes of hepatic uptake include a recent Tc-99m sulfur colloid scan, faulty preparation of Tc-99m MDP resulting in colloid formation, amyloid deposition, hepatic necrosis and hypercalcemia.
